Art breaks monotony of government buildings
Funarte, Memorial do Imigrante and the Sampaio Moreira building are “renovated” with contemporary projects. Federal Spaces, which host Ateliê Fidalga exhibition, and a State space with a exhibition of French.

The spaces of the three governmental spheres – Federal, State and Municipal – in São Paulo, are beginning to take on a new profile, with artistic interventions that are putting such sites on the fine arts map. Funarte, at federal level, linked to MinC (Ministry of Culture), renovated the exhibition spaces in the Champs Elysées district. “São Paulo was traditionally been a focal point of music and theatre for Funarte until the 90s. The field of fine arts was completely abandoned”, reports the organization’s Director of Fine Arts, Ricardo Resende, 47. He chose to “renovate” the space in the central zone of the city via a collective exhibition with Ateliê Fidalga, led by artists Albano Afonso, 45, and Sandra Cinto, 40. The group of 60 artists have just returned from the inauguration of two large displays in Lisbon, but strangely enough, had not yet displayed their works to the people of São Paulo, “It is very interesting to be doing this exhibition here, in a space we didn’t even know, and at such a happy time for Fidalga,” reflects Afonso. “It is a collective that brings together the different styles and subjectivities of the artists, with no hierarchical distinctions.” As such, “All around” displays works of all kinds of artists. Artists range from emerging young artists – such as Carla Chaim, 25, winner of the “Energy in Art” prize in 2009 – to names already well-established in galleries – Ding Musa, Felipe Cama and Marina Palma among others – and participants in salons and incentive programs. In 2010, Funarte will launch plans for projects that specifically exploit the characteristics of the space.
